Discovering San Piero a Sieve

Photo: Pieve di San Pietro (San Piero a Sieve) by sailko, wikimedia commons

We love sharing tips and fun facts about the area of Tuscany we live in, the Mugello Valley. This area is very dynamic, full of tiny ancient towns, stunning landscapes and wonderful food, its Medician history reflected in several villas around the valley. Only 20 minutes, or 14.5 kilometers from Villa Campestri Olive Oil Resort lies an ancient town, alone the route connecting Imola and Bologna to Florence, with a famous church from the 11th century.

One of the most important villas in this area worth visiting is the San Martino Fortress, built by Cosomo I and designed by Bernardo Buontalenti  (who also designed Forte Belvedere in Florence) to protect Medician interests. While it is privately owned and not open to the public, you can still gaze at the amazing exterior covering almost a mile and one of the largest fortresses built in Italy.

Another worthy stop is the Trebbio Castle, constructed on order of Cosimo of the Medici dynasty in the 15th century by Michelozzo of an ancient Lombard tower. It was believed to have been a hunting residence by the Medici family and hosted some famous figures in history including Amerigo Vespucci, who stayed there while to avoid the plague in Florence during the 1400′s.

They do have a few festivals, namely around springtime – which you can read more about here. You don’t want to miss Smarronata, a chestnut festival around October!

Tip* They also have a weekly market every Saturday afternoon, plus an antique market every first Sunday of the month.

Where to eat?
