Vicchio di Mugello: History and What to See
Mugello is a valley north of Florence particularly loved for its breathtaking landscapes. By now the name Mugello is inextricably linked to the circuit where the Moto GPs run, but in this area there is much more to visit.
Vicchio, for example, is a town in the Mugello, completely immersed in the Tuscan countryside, and the birthplace of Giotto di Bondone, one of the most important and famous painters of all time.
The best known artists born in Vicchio
Giotto, as a boy, in these lands led the sheep to graze and, between one stop and another, he portrayed his animals on the stones he found in the uncontaminated valley.
Even the birth of Giotto alone would be enough to give prestige to the whole region, but here in Vicchio there is more for lovers of painting.
In fact, it is also here that another fundamental painter for the History of Art was born: Beato Angelico.
This small Tuscan town has therefore contributed like no other to the world’s artistic development, and a visit to these atmospheres will certainly be extremely fruitful.

It is inconceivable to visit Vicchio and not climb the Vespignano hill to enter the cultural space of encounter and artistic production which today is located where Giotto was born.
The Paths of the painters
Considering the fact that in this magical place it is the landscape that is the real protagonist that has inspired so many brilliant minds, you can dedicate yourself to amazing artistic-environmental excursions.
A path in the middle of nature that winds through the Cimabue Bridge, the Vicchio Bridge, the Museum of Sacred Art and the Giotto’s House and that of Beato Angelico.
Montelleri lake
If you prefer relaxation, coolness and a short walk to the history of art, the ideal place is Montelleri Lake. Also excellent for a nice canoe ride.
Church of Sant’Andrea in Barbiana
Also in the Mugello area it is possible to visit this church linked to the figure of the pedagogist priest Don Lorenzo Milani.
To this day, this place represents a point of reference for the locals also from a pedagogical point of view given the presence of a research and training center.

This town is full of extremely interesting places to visit, but we recommend that you do not miss the local cuisine!
High quality cheeses, Sangiovese and Pinot grigio wine, Mugello tortelli, meat and olive oil are the flagships of this area.
If you manage to visit Vicchio at the end of August you will find the “Fiera Calda”, a splendid event with exhibitions, a market, food stands and a fireworks display on Lake Montelleri.
