According to the ancient legend, the God Saturn, very angry with mankind, threw a bolt of lightning on the Earth. From the crater that this left on the ground, hot waters began to flow, which the Romans and Etruscans before them already used as a relaxing cure-all. This is how the thermal baths of Saturnia were born in Tuscany. If not from the lightning of a god, certainly from very ancient volcanic phenomena and today almost completely disappeared.
The term “Terme di Saturnia” commonly indicates a vast thermal structure in the municipality of Manciano, a few kilometers from the real Saturnia.
The spa includes a park, treatment facilities, a golf club and the famous pools of the Cascate del Mulino.
Surely active and well known even in the Middle Ages, today these spas are a major tourist attraction for anyone wishing to spend a relaxing period in Maremma.
Each spa has its own characteristics due to the mineral elements that make its waters beneficial.
As for the thermal baths of Saturnia in Tuscany, the water flows directly from the extinct volcano of Monte Amiata.
It goes underground and then re-emerges, bringing with it precious minerals: sulfur, calcium, magnesium are just a few.
Furthermore, this water is rich in carbon dioxide which literally “files” the deeper rocks and brings their essence back to the surface.
When it gushes the temperature is above 37°C, sometimes it exceeds 37.5 ° C. The complete change in the pools takes place after about four hours, so that the purity of the water is always guaranteed.
The thermal waters of Saturnia, with their minerals, help to cure and alleviate many problems and not just physical ones.
Immerse yourself in the romantic pools of the Cascate del Mulino – large swimming pools that descend the hill dominated by an old water mill – to relieve muscle inflammation, joint pain, circulation problems, ventilation problems, skin inflammations.
If properly packaged, it can also be drunk, and in that case the water acts for the well-being of the liver and intestines and gallbladder.
Between one thermal bath and the next, you can also go and visit the beautiful town of Saturnia.
Its fortress on which Castello Ciacci stands, the Roman Walls then reworked and reinforced by the Aldobrandeschi and the Porta Romana are monuments to see.
With about an hour’s drive from Saturnia you can easily reach the beaches of Grosseto (Porto Ercole) towards the west, while to the east you reach Lake Bolsena.
To reach the Terme di Saturnia by car: follow the SS 74 Maremmana then enter the Provincial 159 and, near Manciano, the Provincial 10.
The motorways are the A1 with the Firenze Certosa exit (from the north), the A12 with the Civitavecchia exit and for those arriving from Rome the A11, exiting at Civitavecchia and continuing on the Aurelia SS 11.
The closest airports are those of Rome.
Access to the natural thermal pools is free while you pay for the use of the services and resorts associated with them.
