The ancient manufacturing tradition of Mugello is made up of numerous different types of crafts, like the cutlers of Scarperia, the ceramic artists of Barberino and Borgo San Lorenzo, and the pietra serena of Firenzuola.
In the mountainous area of Alto Mugello, in the territories of Firenzuola, Palazzuolo, and Marradi, the rich presence of sandstone has contributed over the centuries to the affirmation of the tradition of the “scalpellini di pietra serena”, or the stone cutters of pietra serena. The importance of this stone is shown in its presence in nearby towns like Scheggianico, Tirli, and Castiglioncello, built entirely in stone, from the cobblestone roads to the tiles on the roofs of the houses.
Today in Firenzuola, beyond the numerous companies realizing artifacts in pietra serena like cobbled stone for road-paving, fountains, stairs, and fireplaces, it’s possible to admire this antique production process in the Museo della Pietra Serena located inside the fortress in its underground space.
The museum’s route guide is aimed to illustrate the excavation and processing phases according to the time-honored tradition (before the introduction of excavating machines or jackhammers) and to recall or create images of diggers, quarrymen, and stonemasons, skilled artisans of this long-standing tradition.
