The history of Tuscany between culture and ancient civilizations
The history of Tuscany dates back to Etruscan civilization.
The Etruscans were a people of great civilization, skilled in agriculture, metalworking and masonry works.
The most important Etruscan centers such as Chiusi, Volterra and Cortona still hold testimonies of the time.
Even in the Middle Ages the civil, spiritual and artistic development of Tuscany is really great: in many cities we still find churches, palaces and medieval walls that retain all their charm.
In 1400 the rich Medici family succeeded in getting the city government transformed into “Signoria”, and Cosimo becomes the first Lord of Florence.
During Medici period, Florence knows its greatest splendor. Infact Florence during the Renaissance is the largest artistic and cultural center in Italy.
After the Medici, other families governed Tuscany and the region had an autonomous status until 1860, when the Tuscans decided to join the other regions to form the Kingdom of Italy.
Tuscan culture between Italian language and regional cuisine
It is said that the “true Italian language” is spoken in Tuscany.
In 1300, different languages were spoken in different regions in Italy. In this same century, three Tuscan writers Dante, Petrarca and Boccaccio write their works not in Latin, but in the language that the people speaks in Tuscany.
The Florentine dialect thus becomes Italian.
But the history and culture of Tuscany does not only pass through spoken language, but also through a world of unique flavors of typical Tuscan cuisine.
Tuscan cuisine is a very simple kitchen, for example meat is cooked only with oil, salt and pepper.
Other typical dishes are prepared with hard bread and vegetables: for example the “ribollita” the “pappa with tomato” and “panzanella”.
And of course, in Tuscany, they drink wine, especially red. Tuscany produces high quality wines such as Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino.
