Castello di Nipozzano – a Frescobaldi wine estate
The Castello di Nipozzano lies above the Sieve and Arno valleys very near to Pontassieve, just a 30 minute drive from Villa Campestri. The word nipozzano is thought to have historically meant “without a well” – a reference to the area’s very dry lands which are perfect for bearing vines.

The Frescobaldi family have been producing wine since 1308 (that’s a lot of wine-making experience!) and now have a total of five estates all in Tuscany. The Nipozzano estate produces just three wines; Nipozzano Riserva, Montesodi Riserva and Mormoreto, and lies in the Chianti Rufina geografical region.
The castle (some parts of which date back 1,000 years) clings to a prominent hilltop and commands impressive views in all directions.
It is possible to book a tour of the old castle historical wine cellars (bring something warmish to wear – they really are damp and chilly), or maybe a wine tasting, paired with some great local cheeses and cold cuts. The wine store at the castle is open from 10am – 1pm, and from 2pm to 6.30pm.

After your visit to the castle you might like lunch or dinner at Il Ritrovo found in Rufina (literally on the road to drive back to Villa Campestri). It’s a relaxed atmosphere with some great uncomplicated local dishes, and often full of noisy Italian families having fun. Join in!
