Enchanting landscapes, wild nature and clear skies. This is precisely the essence of the woods of Monte Amiata, originally a volcano, immersed in the heart of Tuscany, between the provinces of Siena and Grosseto. It is a much-loved tourist destination both in summer and in winter: during the summer it is possible to enjoy splendid days in the open air along the many paths in the area, while during the cold season, the Amiata is dressed in white and, enthusiasts of snow sports can practice their favorite activities.

Municipalities of Amiata

Monte Amiata is surrounded by eight municipalities which offer a wide range of attractions and opportunities for visitors. Arcidosso, Castel del Piano, Castell’Azzara, Santa Fiora, Abbadia San Salvatore, Seggiano, Piancastagnaio and Castiglione d’Orcia are the municipalities that are directly part of the Amiata territory.

Paths of Amiata

During the summer, the woods of Amiata are transformed into a paradise for lovers of nature and outdoor activities. There are many who in this period dedicate themselves to following a network of well-signposted paths that cross dense woods of secular beech and chestnut trees.

Expert walkers or families looking for a day of relaxation in nature, they will find paths suitable for all needs. Along the way, lush vegetation and spectacular views will leave you breathless.

The woods

There are three main woods of Amiata, which every time leave tourists and inhabitants breathless. The first is the Bosco di Isabella, which, near the ancient walls of Radicofani, enchants visitors with its surreal atmosphere.

Then there is the Garden of Daniel Spoerri, between the hills of Seggiano and the majestic volcanic cone, offering an extraordinary visual experience, where art comes to life in sculptures and immersive installations.

Finally, the Giardino di Bonacina, in Montegiovi, in the Municipality of Castel del Piano, is an enchanting refuge where art manifests itself as a dance between fragrant flowers and elegant sculptures.

The meadows of Monte Amiata

The Meadow of the Mills

The first meadow you come across while proceeding towards the top is Prato delle Macinaie, located in Castel del Piano, at an altitude of about 1500 metres. Near the meadow is the Adventure Park, a path suspended among the trees suitable for people of all ages, and there are also excellent quality hotels and bars. It is a perfect place to have a picnic day during the summer and as a starting point for the ski lifts during the winter.

Countess lawn

Slightly smaller in size, at a slightly higher altitude, is the Prato della Contessa. This too, like the other one, has a turf on which to rest in the shade of secular beech trees.

Meadow of the Marseilles

Prato della Marsigliana is located very close to the first shelters for the winter and to one of the many ski slopes on Mount Amiata. This meadow offers a unique experience in a spectacular mountain setting.
