Two Churches Worth Visiting In The Mugello Valley
In this new series, we seek to highlight local landmarks that we and our guests appreciate. The Mugello is a rich land that dates back to the Etruscan period, nearby to Villa Campestri Olive Oil Resort, there are many small towns, museums, churches and villas that should be listed in your next itinerary in the region. The best way to discover it, is to visit the local monuments which will we highlight in this blog. In this edition we will focus on two churches, both with a rich history and sacred art. Our first focus is on a local convent open to the public ‘Bosco ai Frati Convent in San Piero a Sieve’ dedicated to Saint Bonaventure. It dates back to the 12th century and was passed onto the Franciscans in 1212. It was renovated in the 1400’s by Michelozzo on behalf of the Medici family (Cosimo Il Vecchio dei Medici specifically) and enlarged to include a bell tower.
Among the 16th and 17th century art work, we also highly recommend checking out the Allegory of the Cord of Saint Francis by Jacopo Ligozzi (1589).
