Historical activities and traditions not to be missed

There are many historical re-enactments, in addition to the Via Crucis, traditional events that you absolutely cannot miss.

Each fashion show is particularly exciting. One of the many is the Antica Giudeata which takes place with as many as 150 costumed figures. The figure representing Christ carries the cross accompanied by soldiers on horseback, amidst the pain of the Madonna and the Pie Donne. Also present in the procession is Pontius Pilate accompanied by his dignitaries and handmaids.

The outbreak of the Cart in Florence, called Brindellone, can be seen on Easter Sunday. It is a large cart about 9 meters high pulled by oxen which is driven, starting from 9 in the morning, up to the outside of the Cathedral. It’s called Burst of the Cart because it is set on fire with a dove-shaped rocket that lights up the fireworks inside, it’s a unique show!

Another very interesting tradition is the Processione degli Scalzi in Pienza.

This procession is held on Good Friday, it is characterized by the statue of Christ which is carried through the streets of the city, it is preceded by 12 hooded figures who walk barefoot with a torch in their hand.

How to have fun with children and where to eat

The Easter egg hunt is certainly one of the most fun activities to do with your children.

The concept is very simple: the eggs are hidden and the children have to find them. Eggs are usually chocolate but they could also be hard-boiled and colored.

The egg hunt usually takes place before or after Sunday morning mass.

The three large gardens participating in this initiative are: Giardino Bardini in Florence, the Park of the Villa Reale di Marlia in Lucca and the Garzoni Historic Garden in Colodi. This activity can be found both in hotels, in public parks and in vineyards.

As for Easter Monday, Tuscans really like to have picnics in the middle of nature. You can buy the typical dishes of the region, such as fresh pods with pecorino while sipping a nice red wine, in the city markets in S. Agostino and San Lorenzo.
