Sea, mountains, cities of art or food and wine tourism.
There are so many places to visit in Tuscany at Easter and during the whole Spring season that you could lose your mind. Fortunately, there is our guide that will help you easily choose your favorite destination!
Tuscany is a wonderful region to discover especially with the beautiful season.
This magical land offers an infinity of beautiful natural landscapes. The most famous and well-known in the world are those of the Val d’Orcia, Chianti area and the hills around Florence.
But we must also remember the Maremma with its wide Natural Park, the promontory of Monte Argentario with the Orbetello lagoon, the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago with Elba and Giglio islands.
And then the Casentino and the National Park of the “Foreste Casentinesi”, the beautiful coast of Versilia, and the green Mugello near Florence.
For lovers of walking, one of the must-see spring routes in Tuscany is certainly the famous Via Francigena, the pilgrims’ route that in the Middle Ages joined the English town of Canterbury with Rome. The Tuscan stretch of the Francigena passes from the Passo della Cisa to the Acquapendente, an evocative route that crosses a beautiful countryside and beautiful villages.
Tuscany is a paradise for lovers of good food and good wine. Its lands are famous for red wine such as Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. On the hills Chianti wine tours are organized with visits to the vineyards and to the historic cellars, accompanied by special tastings.
Typical dishes include Ribollita, Pici (big handmade spaghetti), Cacciucco, Acquacotta, Fiorentina steak, many other dishes based on meat and legumes, Lampredotto’s sandwich. Dishes to be tasted in the typical restaurants, in the farmhouses scattered in the beautiful Tuscan countryside and in the taverns of the historic centers or medieval villages.
Tuscany is also a territory where you can practice many sports. The main activities are hiking, walking, cycling, but also on horseback, for ancient country paths, parks and natural areas, forests and scenic roads on the sea.
The Easter holiday can be the perfect motivation to visit one of the most beautiful Italian regions: Tuscany.
The temperatures begin to rise and the days get longer, the Easter period is ideal for a trip out of town.
Then it’s spring so the Tuscan hills will be lush and the countryside full of flowers as well as the ancient villages.
There are many activities to do during the Easter holidays both in terms of gastronomy and entertainment.
Whether you are alone, with your partner or with the whole family there are so many things to do throughout the day. In Tuscany during the Easter week temperatures are generally not very high, especially in inland areas in the evening they could drop below 10 °C so bring something warm with you.
There are many historical re-enactments, in addition to the Via Crucis, traditional events that you absolutely cannot miss.
Each fashion show is particularly exciting. One of the many is the Antica Giudeata which takes place with as many as 150 costumed figures. The figure representing Christ carries the cross accompanied by soldiers on horseback, amidst the pain of the Madonna and the Pie Donne. Also present in the procession is Pontius Pilate accompanied by his dignitaries and handmaids.
The outbreak of the Cart in Florence, called Brindellone, can be seen on Easter Sunday. It is a large cart about 9 meters high pulled by oxen which is driven, starting from 9 in the morning, up to the outside of the Cathedral. It’s called Burst of the Cart because it is set on fire with a dove-shaped rocket that lights up the fireworks inside, it’s a unique show!
Another very interesting tradition is the Processione degli Scalzi in Pienza.
This procession is held on Good Friday, it is characterized by the statue of Christ which is carried through the streets of the city, it is preceded by 12 hooded figures who walk barefoot with a torch in their hand.
The Easter egg hunt is certainly one of the most fun activities to do with your children.
The concept is very simple: the eggs are hidden and the children have to find them. Eggs are usually chocolate but they could also be hard-boiled and colored.
The egg hunt usually takes place before or after Sunday morning mass.
The three large gardens participating in this initiative are: Giardino Bardini in Florence, the Park of the Villa Reale di Marlia in Lucca and the Garzoni Historic Garden in Colodi. This activity can be found both in hotels, in public parks and in vineyards.
As for Easter Monday, Tuscans really like to have picnics in the middle of nature. You can buy the typical dishes of the region, such as fresh pods with pecorino while sipping a nice red wine, in the city markets in S. Agostino and San Lorenzo. We recommend the Cascine park for your picnic in the open air.
Unfortunately, it would take months to visit all the beauties of Tuscany at one time and then you need to make a choice.
Florence is without a doubt a must for a holiday in Tuscany. Then the spring itinerary that we suggest moves radially around the beautiful capital.
