The cultural awakening that characterized the Renaissance was born from a new feeling of the value of man developed in all fields, from political to economic, from social to artistic and architectural.
This “new” and “reborn” man soon demanded for himself an environment suited to his dignity. Until the fourteenth century, in fact, the typical bourgeois house was built for both living and working: the ground floor was the shop, the actual lodging consisted of a single large room, where everyone, family and servants, ate, slept and lived.
The house during the Renaissance
Comfort, as we understand it today, was unknown. With the Renaissance, for the first time since the days of ancient Greece and the Romans, the rooms of a house returned to take on well-defined tasks.
One of the most important environments of the Renaissance house was the “studio”, or the private room of the owner, intended for reading, writing, spiritual retreat, and the conservation of papers.
During the Renaissance changes the way to stay at home but also the way to eat, up to the great feasts of the ‘500 in the beautiful dining rooms.
On the occasion of banquets, the tables were decorated with real sculptures of sugar, whose sole purpose was to arouse the admiration of those present as they were not intended for food use but had a purely decorative value.
Renaissance-style rooms
The Renaissance bedroom, richly furnished, was the kingdom of women: here she gave birth, spent her time with her children, received her personal visits.
Very few of these environments have been preserved intact. Many Renaissance-style rooms that can be visited today in the museum houses are only antique reconstructions. Painting is therefore essential for the understanding of the Renaissance “private”. In fact, Renaissance painting is basically realistic, bringing the sacred to the everyday and setting sacred stories in recognizable settings. As a consequence, many paintings and frescos are revealed as true visual documents.
In the incredible cultural context of the Renaissance, splendid and unrepeatable, the evolution of furniture is enriched with new models such as sideboards, benches, cabinets, beds with base and canopy.
Walnut becomes the main wood in the construction and various decorative techniques are refined, such as the pastille, the graffito, the inlay and the carving.
In short, the Renaissance rooms are real pearls, furnished with elegantly decorated furniture and made by the hands of skilled artisans or artists.
