Florence and Dante
Dante Alighieri, the great poet, was born in Florence in 1265 and died in Ravenna in 1321.
Dante became an important literary figure, as he was a pupil of Brunetto Latini and a devoted student of poetry. He wrote the Vita Nuova (New Life) inspired by Beatrice Portinari with whom he had fallen in love but died very young in 1290.
He married Gemma Donati with whom he had three children, and he devoted himself to politics, fighting against the Ghibellines. In 1302 he was accused by the Black Guelphs of receiving bribes and was exiled from Florence under penalty of death.
In Florence it is now possible to visit the Museo Casa di Dante (Dante’s House Museum), an imaginative reconstruction of the poet’s house built in 1910 by Giuseppe Castellucci in the ancient Tower of Giuochi.
Signaled outside by a bronze bust of Dante, it has a lounge on the ground floor and some rooms on the upper floor. The house is equipped with an elevator and from there, there are great views of the city.
