Discovering the Upper Mugello: Palazzuolo sul Senio

Palazzuolo sul Senio nell'Alto Mugello con Villa Campestri Olive Oil Resort

If you want to take a trip out of town in the Upper Mugello, we recommend a very special place: Palazzuolo sul Senio, a medieval village just 23 kilometers from Villa Campestri Olive Oil Resort!

Upper Mugello and its Ancient Villages

The Upper Mugello, also known as “Romagna Toscana” is a mountainous area that offers tourists precious beauties.

Incredible landscapes, friendly, welcoming and hardworking people, genuine food, museums and ancient churches.

History, culture, and tradition in a renewed relationship with nature, this is what Upper Mugello offers.

Palazzuolo su Senio is one of the beautiful villages of the Upper Mugello. We are still in the province of Florence but the atmosphere is typically from Romagna.

In the small shops overlooking the main street, cordiality and kindness have the Romagna accent, stone houses and arcades, steep mule tracks and cobbled streets that cross the village.

Absolutely to visit is the “Museum of the Mountain People” where you can admire a collection of more than a thousand objects bearing witness to local traditions.

Inside the Palazzo dei Capitani, which houses the Museum, you can take a dip in the past, among exhibits of agricultural machines and tools, objects of common use, furniture and anything else related to the daily life of farmers.

Trekking in Palazzuolo sul Senio

For trekking lovers, Alto Mugello offers routes of rare beauty suitable for all levels.

In fact, you can choose between challenging routes, where the journey is recommended only for expert walkers, or opt for easier routes but of great beauty.

Among the many routes in the area we mention the ring that crossing the ridges of the Alto Mugello reaches theancient village of Lozzole, an abandoned village on the ridge, with the ruins of the houses leaning against the partly restored sixteenth-century church.

Walking in the ancient village of Lozzole is like taking a leap into the past.

Where to eat in Palazzuolo sul Senio

We suggest you to have lunch at Locanda Senio whereErcoleand Roberta, he in the dining room, she in the kitchen, have created a charmingly old-fashioned place to enjoy local cuisine by the fire. Much of what they serve is raised in their own gardens.

Ercole is also known as a master pig breeder so we can also expect to savor a great selection of salumi. Ercole brings homemade bread: white bread, homemade bread with Parmesan cheese, brown bread flour, bread with walnuts, bread spiced with anise, schiacciata with olives and rosemary.

Please try: “le Crescentine” (bread dough with ricotta cheese and eggs) with raveggiolo, “marrone” cream, tarassaco jelly, tomatoes and capers.

As a first course try: ricotta gnocchi with chestnut flour and parmesan cheese.

A variety of second courses: pork with pink apples, chicken flavored with marrone beer from Marradi, goat with tarragon, lamb with tarragon and mint.

Finally for dessert, ask for the chocolate roll with marrone flour, or Torta with marrone flour and almonds.

Everything strictly homemade!
