The fragrant truffle: a resource from the Mugello territory

Gioacchino Rossini once called truffles ‘ the Mozart of mushrooms ‘ and several centuries earlier, when it was not clear that this special treat was indeed a fungus  – it was considered a valuable product born from the combination of soil, water and lightning (Plutarch 1 sec. AC) .Known about since the time of the Babylonians ( 3000 BC ), when they troved the beaches in Asia Minor for them, truffles were present among several different historical periods, always representing a refined and delicious food.

Today we are well aware that there are different types of truffles, each characterized by their different environmental characteristics and needs. The Mugello offers an optimal environment for the growth of this precious mushroom, thanks to the attention that public resources, farmers and Tartufai Mugello Association, maintained to preserve and promote suitable areas for the development of various species of truffle. Among them was the prized tuber magnatum pico, the white truffle. This without a doubt is an important resource that enriches the variety of gourmet products from Mugello and which deserves to be promoted and valued the world over.

The White Truffle Fair, now in its eighteenth edition, will be held for 2 days in the old town of Borgo San Lorenzo on November 16th and 17th, 2013. The center will be a buzz of activity with special opening of shops, a series of cultural events, truffle tasting  in addition to a number of delicious food stands offering tasty local food.

– On Saturday, November 16 at 9.30 am – a special truffle excursion in the area will be offered to the public and shuttled by a local bus service (To book a spot, call 329 8722160).

– At 10.00, the stands will open, displaying and selling fresh truffles, and also local and regional, food and wine.

– On Sunday, November 17th at 10.30, you can check out truffle dog demonstrations managed by the Tartufai Mugello association.
