Visit Maremma by bicycle

Maremma, a region in Italy full of picturesque landscapes and fascinating history, offers a unique experience for cyclists looking to explore the area in a sustainable way. Visiting Maremma by bike is a perfect way to combine the pleasure of adventure with respect for the environment. In this article, we will guide you through some of the most inspiring routes and must-see destinations in the region.

The Maremma

Maremma is a region rich in varied landscapes, ranging from jagged promontories overlooking a crystal clear sea and immense countryside, from medieval villages on the hills of Albegna and Fiora to the famous woods of Monte Amiata.

This part of Tuscany is regarded as a true paradise for cyclists, offering them numerous opportunities to create personalized itineraries based on their abilities, available time and individual interests.

San Rabano medieval street

One of the most evocative bicycle routes starts from the Alberese cemetery, along the A1 bis itinerary.

From here, we head towards Spaccasso, pedaling at the foot of this majestic mountain. Continuing, we will reach the Piscina del Prete, from which we will descend along the ancient medieval road of San Rabano.

Along the way, we will cross an enchanting holm oak forest and an ancient olive grove, until we reach the plain.

Continuing on the road, we will have the opportunity to admire farms and zootechnics, before arriving at the Alberese station. From here, we will be able to go back along the same path, thus completing the first part of our journey.

Lake Burano and WWF Oasis

One of the most suggestive stops for a bike tour in Maremma is Lake Burano and the WWF Oasis.

This brackish coastal lake is characterized by the presence of the Torre del Buranaccio, an imposing structure dating back to the 16th century.

Here, you will have the opportunity to admire a variety of birds, from majestic flamingos to elegant gray herons, not forgetting sandterns and bitterns. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars and camera to capture wonderful memories in color.

Semproniano

Another fascinating naturalistic itinerary to explore by bicycle is the one that starts from Semproniano and crosses the Albenga and Fiora valleys.

This route will lead you to the discovery of immense panoramas, nature reserves and ancient Roman baths. During the journey, you will have the opportunity to admire suggestive churches, imposing castles and enchanting ancient villages.

The Duna Feniglia Nature Reserve

One of the most fascinating stages of the bicycle trip is the Duna Feniglia Nature Reserve.

Traveling along the 6 kilometers of this strip of sand that connects Ansedonia to the Argentario, you can admire the natural beauty of the area. It is important to avoid racing bikes on this stretch, especially if you don’t have hybrid tires and it has rained recently. With a little luck, you might even spot some fawns along the way.

Explore the Argentario by bike

Even the Argentario, with its splendid scenery between the sea and lagoons, is the ideal starting point for an unforgettable cycling adventure.

It is an itinerary suitable for everyone, easy, without excessive difficulties and particularly fascinating during the autumn.

The route begins and ends in Capalbio, also allowing the possibility of a mini-trip by train and bicycle during the long weekend of November 1st.

Different options are available to cover the total 76 kilometers of the loop, depending on the preferences and disposition of the cyclists.

During the off-season, hidden surprises can be discovered along the way, making the adventure even more exciting.

The good condition of the roads, with little traffic, the dirt roads and the cycle paths, are perfect for long bike rides in the Argentario.
