Your very own olive tree

Some time ago we had the rather spendid idea of offering a service whereby guests could plant their own olive tree, and on return visits could see it grow.

Olives and a view!

We were right to think it a splendid idea as we are now taking care of over 1000 olive trees that guests have planted, mowing the grass, pruning and feeding the trees and making sure that each has its own easy to read label identifying its owner.

Most of our guests chose to plant a tree in memory of a milestone event such as a birthday or anniversary. Some have more private and deeply personal reasons, perhaps of a person they wish to remember. Some just love the idea of planting a tree!

We try and get pictures of the trees as they grow onto our facebook page, but of course the very best way of checking progress is to come back to Villa Campestri!

Now in August the stone within the olive is hardening, and the flesh surrounding it is rather scarce and contains no oil at this point. However, at this stage the fruit is full of phenolic acids (anti-oxidants) and vitamin E. This was fully understood by Roman ladies of standing who beat the unripened fruits with a pestle and mortar to obtain a thick paste which they applied to their faces and necks effectively creating a very efficient beauty mask.

The harvest of the olive crop is still a good few months away, so there is plenty of time for the olives to grow and ripen. And then the harvest itself? … well, that is another whole story!
