Way up high in an apple tree …

Just a short distance from Vicchio di Mugello it’s as though a tiny area of Trentino (way up in nothern Italy) was relocated to Tuscany! La Azienda Agricola La Matteraia owned by the Malpaga family has been cultivating bio-apples which are almost exclusively grown in the Trento area; Royal Gala, Renette, Golden Delicious and Granny Smith.

A tiny area of the Trentino located in Tuscany!

Very recently the local municipality of Vicchio approved a call to change school lunch menus so that local food products would be privileged over other foods in order to help the local families and teaching staff to learn about and appreciate local products, thus increasing the use of Tuscan products in general. Apples from the Azienda Agricola La Matteraia now make a regular appearance on the schools’ menu, teaching faculty and kids about great food choices and supporting the local economy!

Each day Tuscan schoolchildren sit down to a balanced meal of a soup/rice/pasta dish, followed by a red meat/white meat/fish/pizza/cheese dish with wholemeal bread and they finish with fruit/yogurt. The Mediterannean diet, even in its simplest form is a winner, and now with localised differentiation in suppliers, is looking even stronger.
