What you didn’t know about Villa Campestri
Villa Campestri is not only the first olive oil resort to exist in Tuscany, but rather contains a very interesting and unique history. With this new series on the blog, we want to share what you might not know about the villa and it’s surroundings. Today’s topic focuses on the rich history that is reflected in every detail at our resort, from the antique period furniture to the Villa facade and an interesting destination in the surrounding area.
The origins of human settlement in this area of Italy date back to Etruscan times. Just a few kilometers away is the famous Etruscan settlement of Poggia Colla which we mentioned in our previous blog post. The Medici family arose from Mugello as well as artists such as Giotto, Fra Angelico and Andrea del Castagno. The villa itself was first mention in the year 1222 when the oldest part of the building was part of a fortress of defense protected by watch towers.
Another interesting and very historical holy place nearby is on top of Mount Senario. Seven Florentine nobles in the 13th century decided to abandon their busy lives and live a life of solitude. First living in caves, they eventually constructed a church and created the Servite Order (Servants of Mary), one of the five original Catholic mendicant Orders which is now famous worldwide. A beautiful place to visit, make sure to purchase La Gemma d’Abeto, one of their famous liquors first created in the 1800’s.
