Palio of Siena. The world-famous horse race that takes place twice every summer in Siena’s Piazza del Campo brings together extravagant pageantry, intense rivalry, and serious feasting. Additional information available here. Two hours by car.
Medieval Festival of Monteriggione. A delightful festival in costume with street performers, music and other entertainments, food and drink, all within the walls of this utterly enchanting medieval fortress town. July 8-10 and 15-17, 2016. Visit the town website for more information. An hour and a half by car.
Lirica in Piazza, Massa Marittima. Every August in the lovely town of Massa Marittima in southern Tuscany, a special opera fest takes place in the main square, just at the steps of the stunning Romanesque cathedral. A magical, not-to-miss event for opera fans! First weekend of August. Check the event website for program details. Two and a half hours by car.
Volterra AD 1398. This medieval festival takes place in fascinating Volterra every second and third Sunday of August, featuring knights, noble ladies, jesters, jugglers, musicians, and more. One always-delightful aspect of this festival is the obligatory use of the 14th-century currency known as ‘il grosso’, so if you want to eat, drink, or purchase goods, be sure to stop by the Tourist Office to exchange your euros for some ‘il grosso’ coins! August 21 and 28, 2016. More information available on the event website. Two hours by car.
