In Tuscany For August? Our Best Tips
Traditionally August in Italy is well-known to be the ‘vacation month’ due to Ferragosto holidays, or the Assumption of Mary (when the Palio also takes place in Siena). This typically is when most Italians leave for their annual vacations, and many visiting may be surprised to see shops closed for the month. Personally, we like staying here while everyone escapes. The pace tends to be quieter and the nights can be spectacular for those who love to stargaze.

One exciting option is on the 8th and 9th of August, the feste di San Lorenzo. In Borgo San Lorenzo, a village located in the mugello close to Villa Campestri Olive Oil Resort, festival-goers can enjoy a first ever night run (non-competitive) starting from the village, 10 kilometers in total, otherwise there is a family run of 3.3 kilometers. The following days will be the palio, and you can see more info here (in Italian). August 22nd is a special ‘witches night’ in the town of Marradi. Starting from 6pm on-wards, you will find Soothsayers, fortune tellers and witches will foretell the future or you can shop at the witches’s stalls of or at funny stores that remain open until late at night. Starting at 8pm artists with stilt walkers, fire eaters, dancers will propose their touring shows to involve young and old visitors.
