Il Carro Matto (The Crazy Cart)
Every year at the end of September in Florence the celebration of the “Carro Matto” takes place, where the city recreates the moment of arrival of the fresh bottling of the newly harvested wine for the year, transported to Florence by cart and white oxen coming from the countryside.
The arrival of the new wine in the city is a particularly beautiful moment; in fact more than 2,000 bottles of Chianti Rufina are masterfully stacked in a pyramid to be transported on a cart drawn by a pair of white oxen.
The Carro Matto is accompanied by a parade in historical costumes with drums and flag throwers. Tradition has it the Tuscan wine is transported by cart and white oxen from the town of Rufina until arriving in Piazza della Signoria in front of the Church of Via Calzaiuoli.
