The Lantern Festival
Florence is a city of many festivals and traditions that date back to ancient times, one of which is the Festa della Rificolona, or the Lantern Festival, which takes place every year on the 7th of September.
The ‘Rificolona’ is a tradition dating back to the Renaissance and still today it sees Florentines crossing on foot through city illuminating the streets with paper lanterns to arrive at the end in Piazza della Santissima Annunziata.
The Lantern Festival is a special moment most of all for children. In fact today’s lanterns have some of the most bizarre and colorful designs and forms. According to the tradition handed down, some children walk with the paper lantern while other children try to hit and burn the lanterns and the Rificolona with the help of a blowpipe and clay.
