The Sanctuary of Gabbianello
Situated in the untarnished nature of Mugello, Bilancino Lake (Il Lago di Bilancino) is the biggest manmade lake in Tuscany with a depth of 31 meters and surface area of 5 kilometers squared.
On the northeast shore of the lake you can find the World Wide Fund for Nature sanctuary located in wonderfully charming bucolic landscape, extending over an area of 25 hectares surrounded by the Tuscan-Romagna Apennine and the Calvana mountains. The WWF sanctuary in Gabbianello is an enormous intervention of environmental recovery with the aim of creating wetland habitats, which are among those at the highest risk of death.
Five observation posts allow bird lovers and birdwatchers to observe marvelous animals like the white stork, the crane, the graylag goose, the black-winged stilt, the bittern, the pink flamingo, and the rare osprey all in their natural habit.
The sanctuary has an active mountain bike rental service and it’s also possible to take guided tours, educational tours for schools, workshops, courses for adults, as well as volunteer work.
