Oasis Gabbianello: the home of migratory birds on Lake Bilancino

Perhaps not everyone knows that in the Mugello valley there is one of the WWF Oasis in Tuscany, the Oasis of Gabbianello. Located about 20 km from Villa Campestri Olive Oil Resort in the municipality of Barberino di Mugello, on the north-east shore of Lake Bilancino, the Oasis was created on one of the areas of birds migration in Tuscany and thus allows to observe several types of Birds beginning with the ducks, such as Mallard, Teal and Wigeon, who come here to winter. The oasis, which stretches for 25 hectares, was created during construction of the Lake Bilancino, following the creation of flooded areas along the shaft of the Sieve River. With time the area became a great place to stop for a growing number of migratory birds. Its official opening took place in 2004.

Ideal for nesting of many species, such as the Knight of Italy, the bittern, the Garganey, in the oasis, during migration period, you may spot the white stork, the crane and the wild goose, in addition to the Pink Flamingo.

The oasis of Gabbianello performs year-round guided tours for birdwatchers, guided by environmental guides. During these excursions to the discovery of migratory birds are also organized picnics on the lawn in front of the Visitor Center, where you can also find books, as well as handicrafts.

In addition to mountain bikers, special tours are organized: from May 24 it will be possible to rent at the Visitor Center, some mountain bikes, equipped with helmet, water bottle and baby seats, to visit the Oasis Cycling. The Oasis staff will provide you the new bike trails map.

There are also numerous educational activities such as workshops for schools and photography courses.
