Florence is world-renowned for being the “cradle of the Renaissance“. For centuries its beauty and its artistic heritage marvel tourists and travelers.
Among the great palaces in the city one on all is really exemplary: Palazzo Pitti.
This huge palace is one of the greatest architectural examples in Florence.
Originally the palace was built by the Pitti family in 1457 on the design of Filippo Brunelleschi and realized by his pupil Luca Fancelli.
The original building of Palazzo Pitti provided only the central part of the existing building, consisting of the 7 central windows on the first floor. In 1549 the palace was sold to the Medici, becoming the residence of the family.
In 1560 Bartolommeo Ammannati designed and built the large and gorgeous courtyard and added the two lateral wings. Then Cosimo II de ‘Medici expanded it and opened the front yard.
The palace overlooks the famous Boboli Gardens where Ammannati made the cave with fantastic decorations and water games.
Visiting Palazzo Pitti means retracing the glitter and splendor of a ancient age.
Palazzo Pitti is located on the slopes of the hill on which stands the Boboli Garden.
The Boboli Garden is a historic park in Florence and is connected to Palazzo Pitti and the Fort of Belvedere.
The garden is one of the most important examples of the world of Italian garden and is a true outdoor museum, for the architectural-landscaping setting and for the collection of sculptures ranging from Roman antiquities to the XVI and XVII centuries and some even modern.
Inside Palazzo Pitti there are various museums, including:
The Galleria Palatina, art gallery with more than 500 paintings by Sanzio, Rubens, Tintoretto, Tiziano, etc;
The Galleria d’Arte Moderna, which hosts Italian painters from the eighteenth to the twentieth century;
The Museo degli Argenti, which has a collection of precious objects belonging to the Medici family;
The Galleria del Costume, the Italian Fashion Museum.
In the Pavilion of the Meridiana you can admire the Contini Bonacossi Collection with works by Duccio da Boninsegna and Goya.
The Porcelain Museum, however, remains inside the Boboli Gardens, behind Palazzo Pitti.
The museums of Palazzo Pitti can be visited on the following opening hours:
From Tuesday to Sunday, 8.15 a.m. to 6.50 p.m.
Closing: all Mondays; January 1, May 1, and December 25
