Mugello: a territory to be discovered

Mugello is a wonderful land where it is possible to practice outdoor activities of various kinds such as hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, nature activities, and water sports in the enchanting Bilancino Lake in Barberino del Mugello.

It is a land rich in history and artistic testimonies and above all the land offers different environments, from the harsh beauty of the valleys of the Upper Mugello to the gentle lines that surround the Mugello valley.

Appennine land, beautiful and intimate, covered on the ridges by the green tide of beech, chestnut and oak woods, crossed by the river Sieve that seems to come to life from the large artificial lake of Bilancino.

The faunistic heritage of the complex, thanks to the safeguards provided for the state-owned areas, is particularly rich both in quantitative and qualitative terms.

The presence of fallow deer and roe deer is very numerous. Discreet is the presence of wild boars, hares, foxes, skunks, martens, badgers, squirrels, dormice. The presence of the hedgehog is exceptional. The wolf is definitely present since 1988.

Bilancino Lake represents an heritage to be preserved

A little more than 10 million years ago, compressive pressures formed a large basin that soon the waterways, without any outlet, turned into a lake. The basin extended for about 300 square kilometers from the Calvana Mountains to the Balze di Vicchio. The sediments brought subsequently by the torrents decreed the end of the lake leaving a fertile plain at the bottom of the valley.

Today the valley is home to a new large expanse of water: the artificial reservoir of Bilancino, which occupies just one of the areas in which the ancient basin was divided. Bilancino Lake, containing 69 million cubic meters of water with a maximum depth of 31 meters and a total surface area of 5 kmq of water, is just a few minutes from the Barberino di Mugello toll booth.

Today the lake is a tourist resource offering many outdoor activities. In addition to sport fishing, in fact, Bilancino lake allows you to practice new sports, not only for the territory of Mugello but for the entire region of Tuscany, such as canoeing and sailing.

On the north-eastern shore of Lake Bilancino, near the village of Galliano in Barberino di Mugello, is the WWF Oasis of Gabbianello.

Bilancino Lake, due to its particularly clean waters, is rich in numerous fish species such as carp, chub, perch, trout, pike; there is also the presence of barbs and trout, all coming from the many streams that feed the basin, as well as eels, tenches, catfish and royal perch.

Bilancino Lake in Barberino del Mugello is truly a destination to discover, an unmissable stop during a tour of the beautiful territories surrounding Florence. If you love nature and water sports, we are waiting for you at Villa Campestri Olive Oil Resort, just 20 km from the beautiful Bilancino Lake!
