The fathers of the Italian language

As many Florentines like to remember, it is in the regional capital that the great authors were born who first chose to write in the vernacular, from which modern Italian then evolved.

Prominent exponent of the dolce stil novo, Guido Cavalcanti was a contemporary and great friend of Dante. The latter, however, was not only the author of the Divine Comedy, but also devoted himself to the political life of the city of Florence, in the era of disputes between Guelphs and Ghibellines.

Precisely for this reason he composed in exile what is considered the greatest Italian literary work which is also a cross-section, often ethical and moral, of the fervent medieval culture.

Francesco Petrarca, on the other hand, was born in Arezzo and followed the stilnovist current, celebrating his passion for Laura in the Canzoniere.

Giovanni Boccaccio is considered by scholars to be the greatest European prose writer of his time. Ironic and acute, he is the author of numerous works, among which the famous Decameron stands out.

The painters and sculptors who have embellished Italy

The city of Florence was also the birthplace of numerous figurative artists, such as Cimabue, Giotto’s master and surpassed by him. Their artistic synthesis comes with Masaccio, who manages to recombine Giotto’s volumes according to the perspectives invented by Brunelleschi, including the plastic force of the poses of Donatello, sculptor and architect.

Precisely for this reason it is considered fundamental for the Florentine Renaissance, begun in the fifteenth century and carried on first by Michelangelo Buonarroti, painter and sculptor, and then, in the following century, by exponents such as Sandro Botticelli.

The latter is known in particular for his Venus and for the work representing Spring.

One of the artists who are still the most enigmatic and brilliant today is, without a shadow of a doubt, Leonardo da Vinci. It is no coincidence that he is considered as the person who best embodied the Italian spirit of the Renaissance, embracing a huge number of topics and interests in his research.

It is enough to know that Leonardo was a scientist, philosopher, architect, painter, sculptor, draftsman, essayist, set designer, mathematician, anatomist, botanist, musician, engineer and designer.

In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Tuscany returned to the fore in the world of art, thanks to two fundamental painters, both born in the city of Livorno. These are the Macchiaiolo Giovanni Fattori, who was a painter and engraver and Amedeo Modigliani, a painter and sculptor famous above all for the women he painted, characterized by tapered and slender lines.
