Mother’s Day is an anniversary felt all over the world, especially in Italy. Since “mum is always mum” discover with us how to celebrate her, with 5 original ideas for Mother’s Day 2020!

The origins of Mother’s Day

National “Mother’s Day” was established in the United States on the proposal of Anna M. Jarvis in 1914.

Upon the death of her mother, Anna wrote letters to many influential people at the time, such as ministers and members of Congress, to celebrate a national day dedicated to mothers.

Her goal was to make sure that all the children could show attention and affection to their mother while she was still alive.

Thanks to her tenacity, the first Mother’s Day was celebrated in Grafton and the following year in Philadelphia, on May 10, 1908. Anna Jarvis chose the carnation, the mother’s favorite flower as a symbol of this festival: red for mothers alive, white for missing mothers.

The campaign by Anna Jarvis and her supporters continued until Mother’s Day was celebrated in almost every state of the Union in 1911.

Mother’s Day in the World

Mother’s Day as a national holiday was decreed in 1914 by American President Woodrow Wilson, deciding that it would be held every year on the second Sunday of May.

After the United States this date was adopted by Denmark, Finland, Turkey, Australia and Belgium.

In Norway the second Sunday of February is celebrated, in Argentina the second Sunday of October; in France Mother’s Day falls on the last Sunday of May and is celebrated as the family’s birthday.

In Italy Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, as in the United States.

The symbols of Mother’s Day are red, heart and roses, which more than any other flower represents love and beauty.

In addition to flowers, chocolates and perfumes are a classic gift for Mother’s Day, but even more appreciated are the small thoughts made with your own hands.

In a certain sense, the celebration of Mother is connected to the concept of origin and “Mother Nature”, for this reason there is nothing better than celebrating one’s mother with a green gift.
