Day Trip to Venice: Budget Options Even with Children!

There are so many interesting day trips that you can take from Tuscany, we recommend multiple visits to really explore the country slowly. From our corner in the Mugello Valley, you can take numerous day trips to various areas of the country while coming back to a comfortable, quite base in the hills of Vicchio.

Since the famous carnival in Venice is running right now until the 15th of February, this is the perfect time to visit a city that so many people dream of. When is carnival? It’s held over the 10 days leading up to Lent, so it varies from year to year depending when Easter falls which is why it started early this year. And while it can be very expensive to take the train or drive (not recommended), we want to give you a few tips on visiting Italy’s ‘city on the water’ this winter season.

Tip #1 Best Train Deals with Italotrento

Italo is a new train running in Italy offering high-speed trips for major cities like Florence , Rome and Venice. It’s very cheap compared to Frecciarossa and has its own website. We saw deals for trips to Venice from nearby Florence for only 19 euros one way, and a special ‘two for one’ ticket on a certain days of the carnival, like the 12th.

The train is the easiest and most convenient way to go and the carnival is something that everyone should experience at least once.

Tip #2 Eat Like a Venetian

Eating in Venice can be a pricey affair, which is why we suggest you ‘eat like a Venetian’ and go for snacks rather than a full meal. Make sure to stop at the many bacari that pepper the city, these are tiny little bars serve ciccheti (almost like tapas, they cost around €1-€2). One of our favorites is a local joint called Alla Vedova. Or head to  the Canareggio district for a spritz or prosecco which is surprisingly cheap.

Tip #3 Just Have Fun!

Of course, the best part of carnival is just having fun. While we give you a few good options on how to get there cheaply and not break the bank over lunch and dinner, the best part of carnival is just exploring it yourself. Buy a mask, get your face painted and enjoy one of the best parties in Italy!
