The White Truffle in Tuscany: the king of truffles

Tuscany is a land particularly suited for collecting truffles thanks to its geo-morphological conformation, made mainly of hills covered with dense forests.

Oaks, hazels, pines, poplars, lime trees and willows are the plants that best lend themselves to the development of truffles.

Although there are many varieties of the mushroom, the Tuscan subsoil mainly gives the white truffle, the most valuable variety defined in fact the “king of truffles”.

The white truffles that are harvested in Mugello and in the area of San Miniato certainly represent the excellence of Tuscan production.

Every year in Mugello the precious mushroom is celebrated and tasted at the unmissable truffle festival in Barberino del Mugello.

Where to find truffles in Tuscany

In Tuscany the truffle collection is divided into six main areas:

• Mugello, the hilly area that extends north of Florence, where a white truffle is harvested among the finest in Italy;
• The area of the “Crete Senesi”, which produces white truffles, and extends over almost all the Municipalities of the province of Siena;
• The district of the hills of San Miniato, which extends in part to the area of the Valdelsa;
• Val Tiberina, territory of the province of Arezzo that extends between the ancient Etruscan city and the Tuscan Romagna;
• The Casentino, an area covered with dense forests on the border between the provinces of Florence and Arezzo. The truffles produced are of the precious white variety;
• The coast of the Grosseto Maremma, which produces the marzuolo truffle.

In Tuscany the prized white truffle is harvested from 10 September to 31 December, while the precious black truffle is harvested from 15 November to 15 March.

The truffle festival in Barberino del Mugello

From Saturday 27 October to Sunday 28 October 2018, the “Black and White Truffle Market Exhibition”, more commonly called the Barberino del Mugello truffle festival, will be held in Mugello.

The program of the event includes delicious tastings based on truffles and other seasonal products. In addition to truffles it will be possible to buy chestnuts, honey and extra-virgin olive oil.

The Black and White Truffle Market Exhibition in Barberino del Mugello is therefore an unmissable event for all lovers of this precious mushroom.

For all those who want to try truffle hunting, Villa Campestri offers a truly unique experience.
