Passo della Futa: Where it is and What to See in the Surroundings
Some parts of Italyhave a unique history that makes them attractive tourist destinations for a variety of reasons. Places that are sometimes out of the way of conventional itineraries which, however, should not be underestimated in the least. Indeed, their exclusivity in this sense allows to know sites, attractions and historical implications that give further depth to a given territory.
The “Passo della Futa” falls into this category thanks to specific characteristics. And although it is the most popular gateway in the Apennines, many are unaware of the places of interest that define its area of expertise. A treasure trove of knowledge, finds and testimonies of inestimable value.
Passo della Futa: where it is
As mentioned above, Passo della Futa is a pass in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines located near the enchanting village of Firenzuola.
It is crossed by the former state road 65 of the Futa which, in turn, crosses with the current provincial road 116 of Cornacchia, useful for reaching Firenzuola.
Its landscape conformation divides the Mugello valley from that of the Santerno river; a prerogative that is linked to a past of a certain depth.
In fact, in antiquity and in the early Middle Ages, the pass in question was the only access point for the Santerno and Senio valleys.
From 1361 it was flanked by another prominent stretch, namely the Passo del Giogo.
The completion of the Strada della Futa took place in 1759, consecrating it as the busiest route for crossing the Apennines.
A logistical and highly strategic importance to reach the preset destinations and that along the way, delights the view with various patches of local vegetation.
What to see around the Futa Pass
Along the Passo della Futa there are many points that enhance the passage of tourists and commuters in those parts.
Just think of the long wall that runs along the stretch in question representing a building that in ancient times protected travelers from snow storms and strong gusts of wind. A historical and architectural testimony that certifies the centrality of this pass, for several centuries now, to maintain strong communications with the neighboring areas and the transport of essential goods for the community.
Another site not to be missed is the military cemetery built in 1969 on the guidelines underlying the project by the German architect Oesterlen.
An imposing structure, on the top of a lush hill, which houses 30,863 bodies belonging to the Germans soldiers who died during the Second World War. A memorial site with a profound historical value.
The Passo della Raticosa
The Futa Pass also leads to another extremely interesting destination, especially for two-wheel enthusiasts.
This is the Passo della Raticosa, an area where mountain ranges and hills predominate.
However, its main peculiarity lies in being a pleasant stopping point for motorcyclists.
Here, in fact, it is possible to find refreshment and check out your bike in total tranquility; in addition to that, you can interact with other riders from regions such as Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna.
In short, it is an area devoted to relaxation and the recovery of those energies essential to continue your journey.
