“Renaissance Days”: the history comes to life in Scarperia

With the end of summer and the arrival of September, Mugello is ready to live one of the most important historical commemorations of the territory: the Renaissance Days and the “Diotto“, taking place in Scarperia, not far from Villa Campestri Olive Oil Resort. These are two events that really do allow a dip in the Renaissance period at the court of the “Vicario” of Scarperia. The “Vicario” in fact, appointed by the Florentine Republic since 1300, was the one who administered the town of Scarperia: the headquarter of his power was the Palazzo Vicario in the center of the city, which is still one of the main attractions.

Renaissance Days are held the first weekend of September, in preparation for the great Feast of “Diotto”: the streets of Scarperia for two days turn into a Renaissance village, where you can meet ladies and gentlemen in Renaissance dresses, or see scenes of the market with vendors of cutlery and teachers that show the public their skills in working with knives.

Tourists walking in streets, will attend performances, exhibitions of falconry, musicians and flag-wavers, as it was more than 5 centuries ago: you can also buy goods on display, but only with the “Fiorino di Scarperia” money coined for the occasion and that will be changed by “treasurers” placed at the entrance of the center.

In this occasion you can also visit the Palace of the “Vicario” and the ancient Tower of the bastion in the South-West.

The festivities culminate on September, 8th with the celebration of the arrival of the “Vicario” and “Diotto“.

For more information on schedules and appointments of “Renaissance Days” in Scarperia you can contact the staff at Villa Campestri Olive Oil Resort.
