Borgo San Lorenzo and Mugello
Mugello is a territory located a few kilometers from the splendid Tuscan capital.
It is a large natural valley bathed by a mouth of the Sieve river, a tributary of the Arno. The Mugello area includes a stretch of the Tuscan-Romagna Apennines to the north, the Calvana Mountains to the west and Monte Giovi and Senario to the south.
The richness of nature, the variety of landscapes between flat, mountainous and hilly areas, villages and historic residences, make Mugello a territory to be truly discovered. Of the 10 municipalities that are part of it, Borgo San Lorenzo is very suggestive. It is perhaps the most important center of the whole area, which arises where the Val di Sieve becomes wider and widens under the watchful eye of uncontaminated nature.
The origins of the municipality of Borgo San Lorenzo
Borgo San Lorenzo is the capital of Mugello.
Of Roman foundation, the Municipality has kept its medieval historic center unaltered.
Worthy of note is the Romanesque Pieve, a majestic building that houses works of art.
In the mid-10th century, Borgo San Lorenzo passed through the dominion of the Florentine Bishops and was the site of the famous clashes between the Guelphs and Ghibellines.
The Porta Fiorentina and the Porta dell’orologio date back to the mid-1300s.
In the first half of 1500 the country became a precious stronghold against France.
In modern times, at the dawn of the twentieth century, Borgo San Lorenzo stood out for its manufacturing activity. A few years ago, in 2017, it was recognized among the Cities of Ceramics.
What to visit in Borgo San Lorenzo
If you opt for a trip to Borgo San Lorenzo, going into the surrounding hills you can reach Grezzano and the Museum of Rural Life in Casa d’Erci.
Through the path you will pass by the Mulino Faini, a construction that dates back to around the year 1400.
The area, ideal for nature lovers, allows you to dedicate yourself to excursions in the countryside or to organize yourself to taste the food prepared at home for a pleasant picnic, which can be set up in the nearby equipped area.
Those who want to make an excursion on foot or by bike can also go to the Passo della Colla di Casaglia and stop to visit the centuries-old Mulino Margheri, dating back to 845 and incredibly in operation.
At the mill you can watch the grinding of the wheat and you can also buy the flour that is produced by the millstones. Looking on the road, your gaze crosses the Sanctuary, a religious place built in 1578 following a miraculous event that occurred in Borgo San Lorenzo.
